Are you still throwing away surplus office furniture? Are you tired of having to negotiate the value of your inventory with shady dealers?
Are you still throwing away excess non-circulating office inventory? Is your furniture aging in storage? Are you tired of having to negotiate the value of your inventory with shady dealers?
Questions that Kitty Sluisman, facility manager at Sweco Nederland was regularly confronted with and did not get a profitable answer to. Kitty told: "I have one of the nicest jobs in this company. I visit all locations, have contact with many colleagues and work in a very dynamic field".
In recent years there have been many changes within Sweco in terms of accommodation, both in terms of design and appearance. Conscious choices have been made as to where to locate our offices. In the past we always did this with a removal firm, which was logistically simple and worked quickly. Good furniture went into external storage to be used at a later date. Furniture we no longer wanted to use was sold to employees and the rest went to the dump. We were doing quite well that way, we thought at the time.
Together with TRIBOO, we reviewed that process a year ago and now do it very differently. And frankly, logistically still just as simple and fast. With much lower costs and revenue streams that we didn't have before. But more importantly: much more sustainable.
The first step in adjusting the process, was to take a close look at the external storage. Quite a bit of money was going into that unnoticed each month. A major cleanup operation resulted in the fact that we now no longer have any external storage. The furniture that was aesthetically and functionally still good has been reused at our locations; the rest has been disposed of.
And no, not rucksomely in a container to the dump, but from storage separated into monostreams of raw materials (formerly waste). These mono streams were then taken to the re- and upcycling company where they could be processed directly. The proceeds of our valuable raw materials were returned to our account at TRIBOO. Where movers and buyers often use a non-transparent double business model (charging for landfill without settling the possible raw material proceeds), these were now coming directly our way.
We now carry out this separation at source everywhere, when emptying or cleaning up locations or rooms and archives. We still use the sales campaigns among our employees; they are gratefully used and this is actually the most sustainable way of 'disposing'. With the raw materials reprocessing at the source, our removal costs have dropped considerably and we are now doing this in a sustainable way.
We have also started to make circular office furniture and products from our own waste. Our goal is ZERO WASTE and to make sure our raw materials don't end up in landfills or incinerators. We have made a start on this by making our waste separation stations from our own paper and cardboard waste. We want to be a circular leader and make an impact on the realization of the waste-free society! We are Sweco; most approachable and committed partner with recognized expertise.
