Our tables grow in the Dutch forest! In cooperation with Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) we have been looking for new applications for this Dutch wood.
Did you know that 40 trucks of wood are removed from Dutch forests every day? The trees that are cleared go mainly to the paper industry and chipboard factories. A portion goes through the shredder and is the basis for biomass. In collaboration with Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission), we are looking for new sustainable applications for this Dutch wood. The REDWOOD collection of tree trunk tables.
4 tree species from Dutch forests form the basis of the REDWOOD collection of tree trunk tables. Douglas fir, poplar, beech and American oak each have their own story and natural appearance. A valuable and durable piece of jewelry from Mother Nature that will last a lifetime.
The Douglas fir is a fast growing conifer. The tree has a pyramidal crown of which the upper branches grow upright and the lower ones droop. The needles are dark green and have two white stripes on the underside. When the needles are bruised a citrus-like smell is released. The cones are ovoid and reddish-brown in color. The Douglas fir is a much planted species in the Dutch forests, mainly for timber production. The tree is rarely used in urban areas, at most in wooded gardens or parks. The grain is fine and the thread runs fairly straight, but sometimes also shows a spiral growth and wavy thread.
The logs are sawn into slabs of approximately 50 mm thick. The boards can be made with or without bark into robust and very sturdy log tables. To keep the plates flat and straight, parts are dried back to 16-18%. The thickness of the plates is approximately 52 mm, the width approximately 50 cm and the length approximately 300 cm.
